Chapter Thirteen

Friday 16 August 2013

For Jenny, work had been one disaster after another. She had kept her composure, but now, nestled in the safety of her own home, she was happy to let the stress overwhelm her. As Jenny placed her cup on the table, a sharp knock at the door surprised her.

She unlocked it and stared out at Lamont Jones. He was smiling, smelt good and wore a fitted navy sweater, corduroy trousers and clean trainers.

‘Can I help you?’ asked Jenny.

‘May I come in? I’m not accustomed to doing business on the doorstep.’

Jenny shrugged, allowing him in. Lamont took his shoes off and sat down in the living room. It was very spacious, with various shades of red furniture and porcelain white furniture.

Similar to his own place, there were books and papers resting on the cherry oak coffee table. Lamont placed his phone and wallet on the papers, leant back and steepled his fingers. She watched, amused.

‘Can I get you a drink?’

Lamont gazed at her, lingering on her body. Her face grew warm. Apart from a hasty apology, Jenny hadn’t spoken to Lamont since he’d all but forced her from his house.

‘Jenny?’ Lamont’s voice brought her back to earth.

‘Sorry. Did you say something?’

‘I asked what the choices were.’ He met her eyes.

‘Choices for what?’ she was flummoxed. Lamont smiled again.

‘You offered me a drink. I was enquiring what was available,’ he said.

‘Right. Juice. Tea. Coffee. Water. Wine.’

‘Do you have green tea?’

Jenny nodded.

‘I’ll have some of that please.’

Jenny headed toward the kitchen. Lamont’s words stopped her.

‘I guess you were right,’ he said.

Jenny turned around, ‘about what?’

Lamont was in front of her now. He drew her in close, kissing her skilfully. She allowed the moment to continue, kissing him back harder. Lamont broke the embrace.

‘You learn more about a person when you turn up randomly.’

‘I’m glad I inspired you.’ Jenny kissed him again. The pair of them swayed in the middle of the room, green tea and other troubles all but forgotten.

Later, they lay in bed amongst messy, damp, sheets.

‘That was unexpected.’

‘Was it?’ Lamont’s cocky response tickled Jenny. She poked him in the ribs.

‘There’s no way you knew what would happen.’

‘I’m a man of many talents, Jen.’

‘Pity sex isn’t one,’ Jenny giggled at Lamont’s splutter. ‘Kidding. Maybe.’

‘That was low,’ Lamont laughed, squeezing her. ‘You’re gonna give me a complex.’

‘I’ll try not to. How did you find my address?’ Jenny asked.

‘Like I said, many talents.’

‘I’m serious. You weren’t having me followed, were you?’

‘Course I wasn’t. Kate told me,’ said Lamont.

‘What happened last time? Why did you leave?’

‘Business.’ Lamont’s whole manner cooled in an instant.

‘Business could mean a lot of things.’

‘True. I can’t say anymore though.’

Jenny had so many responses. Lamont seemed to turn his emotions on and off. She felt as if she was playing catch up. The pair were engaged in a game and for the first time, Jenny wasn’t sure she was winning.

‘Fine. Keep your secrets.’ she nibbled on Lamont’s bare chest, closing her eyes.

‘We do what we need to, to keep the intrigue alive,’ said Lamont.
